International Student Scholarships and Awards

There are numerous private and government scholarships and awards on offer to international students in Australia. This article will help you understand what you need to qualify, as well as explain some of the different Awards/Scholarships available to you, as an international student studying in Australia.


Australian Awards (Government Organisations)

The Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships and fellowships funded by the Australian Government that aim to contribute to the long term development needs of Australia’s partner countries, in line with bilateral and regional agreements. The Awards strive to develop leadership potential and stimulate lasting change by empowering a global network of talented individuals through high-quality education experiences in Australia and overseas.

Who is eligible to apply?

- Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing the scholarship.

- Be a citizen of a participating country and be residing in and applying for the scholarship from their country of citizenship

- Not be married, engaged to, or a de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency, at any time during the application, selection or mobilisation phases (note: residents of Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau with New Zealand citizenship are eligible but must apply for a DFAT (subclass 576) visa.

- Not be current serving military personnel. - Not be a citizen of Australia, hold permanent residency in Australia or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently.

- Not be applying for another long-term Australia Award unless they have resided outside of Australia for twice the length of the total time that they were in Australia. For example, a previous awardee who has been on an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia for four years will not be eligible to apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship until they have been home for eight years. 

- Have satisfied any specific criteria established by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s country of citizenship

- Be able to satisfy the admission requirements of the institution at which the award is to be undertaken (this may mean that Program Areas will need to withdraw an award offer if the recipient cannot satisfy the institution’s admission requirements. This may not be known until Program Areas request a placement at selected institutions)

- Be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to hold a DFAT (subclass 576) visa. This may mean that the Program Area will need to withdraw an award offer if the recipient cannot satisfy the visa requirements.

- Applicants must inform the Program Area of any connection or relationship to staff employed at Program Areas or with managing contractors so that the application may be properly and transparently managed.


Scholarships Offered By Australian Awards/The Australian Government.

Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships. (Applications open April 2015)

Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships are internationally competitive, merit-based scholarships, provided by the Australian Government that support citizens of the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development programmes in Australia and for Australians to undertake these programmes overseas. All successful applicants receive: – Travel allowance: $3,000 (Provision to pay up to $4,500 under special circumstances) – Establishment allowance: $2,000 (Fellowships) or $4,000 (Scholarships) – Monthly stipend: $3,000 (paid up to the maximum programme duration on a pro-rata basis) – Health insurance for the full programme duration (OSHC for non-Australians) – Travel insurance (excluding during programme for non-Australians)


Category’s of Endeavour Scholarships.

Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship. The Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship provides financial support for non-Australians to undertake a postgraduate qualification at a Masters or PhD level either by coursework or research in any field in Australia for up to four years.

Endeavour Research Fellowship. The Endeavour Research Fellowships provide financial support for non-Australian postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows to undertake short-term research (4-6 months) towards a non-Australian Masters, PhD or postdoctoral research in any field in Australia, and for Australian postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows to undertake short-term research (4-6 months) towards an Australian Masters, PhD or postdoctoral research, in any field, overseas.

Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Scholarship. The Endeavour Vocational Education and Training (VET) Scholarship provides financial support for non-Australians to undertake vocational education at a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree level in any field in Australia for up to two and a half years. Vocational education and training provides occupational or work-related knowledge and skills. The courses are directly related to a trade, occupation or ‘vocation’ in which the applicant participates. These courses exclude degree and higher level programmes normally delivered by universities.

Endeavour Executive Fellowship. The Endeavour Executive Fellowship provides financial support towards professional development opportunities (1-4 months) for high achievers in business, industry, education or government for non-Australians and Australians. The Endeavour Executive Fellowship focuses on learning and building skills and knowledge through a host work environment in the applicant’s field or area of expertise rather than through formal enrolment in a study programme and are not suitable for academic research proposals. Academic research proposals are more suited to the Endeavour Research Fellowships. If the proposed programme contributes to or results in an applicant receiving a formal qualification, they will not be eligible to apply for this category. Applicants must be nominated by their host organisation. The professional development activity must be vocationally useful while not being geared toward an immediate commercial outcome as its purpose. Professional development activities could include management training, peer-to-peer learning, mentoring or attending a conference or short course.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible to receive an Endeavour Scholarship or Fellowship, applicants must:

–  Be aged 18 years or over at the commencement of their programme

–  Be a citizen and/or permanent resident of a participating country

–  Commence their proposed programme after 1 January 2015 and no later than 30 November 2015. Applicants who have already commenced or will commence their intended programme prior to 2015 are not eligible to apply.

–  Provide all relevant supporting documentation

–  Not currently hold or have completed, since 1 January 2013, an Australian Government sponsored scholarship and/or fellowship (directly administered to recipients by the Australian Government)

Participating countries.

Americas: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela.

Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam.

The Caribbean: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.

Europe: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Reunion, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland).

Middle East: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.

Pacific: Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Federated states of), Nauru, New Caledonia, NewZealand (including Cook Islands), Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.


International Postgraduate Research Scholarships. (IPRS)

IPRS enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers. Scholarships are open to international students of all countries (except New Zealand) and are available for a period of two years for a research masters degree or three years for a research doctorate degree. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependants.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible to apply for an IPRS the applicant must be an international student (except New Zealand) and commencing full-time enrolment in a higher degree by research at an eligible university in Australia. 

– Be an overseas student

– Meet international student visa requirements as specified by the DIAC, including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

– Be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a HDR at a HEP in Australia that is an eligible scholarship provider.

– Be undertaking study in a subject area identified by the HEP as one of its areas of research concentration

– Not hold a research qualification regarded by the HEP to be equivalent to an AustralianResearch Doctorate or, if undertaking a Research Masters, not hold a research qualification regarded by the HEP to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters.

– Not have held an AusAID scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS.

– Not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution.

How to apply:

Online applications. Go to the Online Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS). When you register online, you will be required to answer some questions to establish your eligibility. You will then be given a unique registration number, username and password. You do not need to submit your application immediately. You can update your draft application form and supporting documentation up until you reach the final submission date for your country.

Important things to remember before you apply.

  • Check the open & close dates for your country, and select your country of citizenship/residency from the list of participating countries for specific information on eligibility, priority areas and how to apply. See the participating country  page for opening and closing dates.
  • If you intend to apply, you must read the scholarship policy handbook. The handbook provides information including general eligibility requirements, selection processes, entitlements and awardee responsibilities. Note that the department may revise and update the handbook at any time without notice.
  • Some countries encourage and allow you to apply online  while others require hard-copy applications. See your participating country profile for more information.
  • Once you have checked the opening and closing dates for your country, and have referred to the Participating Country Profile to see which method of application they will accept, see the below options on how to apply.

 

Private Institutions.

Just about every University in Australia has scholarships offered to International students, but the criteria and scholarships vary dramatically depending on the university. Listed below are some examples of the scholarships offered to international students, to help you get an understanding of what is available to you as an international student studying in Australia. It is always advised to talk to the university’s International Student Office in regards to what is currently available to you and what is required to apply.


University Of Melbourne (Melbourne, VIC)

 

International Undergraduate Scholarships.

Applications close 31st of January 2015.

The International Undergraduate Scholarships were established by the University of Melbourne in recognition of the significant contribution made by international students to the diversity of the University’s student population.The University usually awards 50 scholarships per annum.

The International Undergraduate scholarship provides one of the following benefits:

  • a one off $10,000 fee remission from tuition fees in the first year of an undergraduate degree; or
  • a 50% remission from tuition fees for the normal full-time duration of an undergraduate degree; or
  • a 100% remission from tuition fees for the normal full-time duration of an undergraduate degree

Who is eligible?

  • be a citizen of a country other than Australia and New Zealand and not a permanent resident of Australia;
  • have received an unconditional offer for an undergraduate course;
  • have achieved excellent final year school results, such as:not have  previously undertaken any tertiary studies 
    • 4 A-grades in the GCE A Levels
    • an ATAR of 99.9 in the Australian Year 12 program,
    • overall 98% in an approved Foundation program
    • an International Baccalaureate (IB) score of 44; and

How to apply.

You do not need to submit an application for this scholarship. All eligible students who have received an unconditional offer for admission to an undergraduate degree will automatically be considered.
International Undergraduate Fee Remission Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and allocated on a competitive basis subject to quotas by course and region. Scholarships have been awarded to students from countries such as Mexico, Singapore, Bangladesh, China, Mauritius, Sweden, Malaysia, USA and India.

RMIT (Melbourne, VIC)

 

Foundation Studies Scholarship.

Applications accepted all year round.

If you are an international student commencing Foundation Studies at RMIT, this scholarship could pay a contribution towards your tuition fees. The scholarship pays $4000 towards your tuition fees.Scholarships are available each year, and one will be awarded for each program intake, commencing with the February 2015 intake.

Who is eligible?

  • be an international student
  • be studying Foundation Studies at RMIT
  • display high standards of academic merit and personal achievement.
  • willing to be involved in RMIT activities beyond your academic program

 This scholarship is not available if you are studying any undergraduate or postgraduate programs.

ACER International Student Scholarship – Business (AISS)

Applications close March 2015

If you are a commencing undergraduate student within the College of Business under (Commerce, Economics, Accounting, etc) this scholarship can provide you with financial assistance.The value of the scholarship is AUD$50,000 for tuition fees, payable to a maximum of $12,500 per semester over two-three years. One scholarship awarded per calendar year and the first year of award is 2014.

Who is eligible?

  • be an international student
  • be commencing in 2015
  • be studying an undergraduate Business degree at an Australian RMIT Campus
  • have received an excellent result in the selection test, ISAT.
  • This scholarship is only for international students. Permanent residents or citizens of Australia will not be considered.
  • The recipient must be the holder of a foreign passport with an Australian Government student visa number 573 (higher education).
  • The recipient must at all times abide by the terms of the visa. This includes adhering to the number of hours employed per week, attendance at the course of study and obeying Australian laws. If the Australian Government withdraws the visa, then the scholarship will be discontinued.

You must apply directly(online) to ACER for the scholarship. After you complete and submit your application for the scholarship, you will receive an email from the AISS Office confirming receipt of your application. You will be provided with a link to the selection test (ISAT) website. The registration fee for ISAT is USD$300. You must sit ISAT to complete your scholarship application. Bond University (Gold Coast, QLD)

International Student Scholarship.

Applications close 23rd of January 2015 These scholarships are available to international students who have demonstrated outstanding academic ability (academic merit based scholarships). The scholarship is for 25% to 50% of tuition fees of any undergraduate or postgraduate degree (excluding Bond University’s Medical Program, Master of Psychology, and Doctorate of Physiotherapy)

Who is eligible?

  • Available for international students only, for undergraduate or postgraduate study.
  • Applicants must currently be or have previously been in the top 5% of their high school or university class.
  • Students will be selected for scholarships based on outstanding academic ability. In addition, demonstrated strong leadership skills and extensive involvement in extracurricular activities will also be considered.

How to apply.

All international students who have made an application to study at Bond University (by the scholarship closing date for each semester) will be considered for an International Student Scholarship. It is recommended that when students complete a Bond , they submit a personal statement (outlining why you should be awarded a Bond scholarship), references, resume and certified copies of other relevant documentation to assist in supporting your application.

Griffith University (Brisbane, Gold Coast. QLD)

Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarships.

Applications open February 2015

The Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (GUIPRS) are available during the University’s mid and end-of-year research scholarship rounds. The GUIPRS covers tuition fees for the student for up to three years for doctoral candidates and up to two years for research masters candidates. In addition, the scholarship covers Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the student and any dependant/s for the duration of the scholarship. The GUIPRS is a full fee paying scholarship and matches the value of the fees charged by the enrolment element.

Who is eligible?

The GUIPRS is available to international students only. Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a Bachelors degree with honours equivalent to first class and be intending to enrol full-time in an approved doctoral or research masters program.

Applicants who do not have First Class Honours may demonstrate equivalency to first class honours through the following:
– refereed journal publications (or acceptance for publication);
– referred conference paper presented and written as first author;
– evidence of other research output such as a book, book chapter, creative work or performances; or
– Also include evidence of any research income, awards, professional experience and so forth.
– Part-time awards may be offered to students who, for social or medical reasons, are unable to study full-time.

New applicants must follow the process for submitting an online application for a higher degree by research program, which also includes a section for scholarship application. Please note, unless the scholarship round is officially open the online application form will only be assessed for candidature. Those students offered candidature outside of the scholarship round may apply for scholarships as current students.

University Of Canberra (Canberra ACT)

UC Scholarship For International, Migrant & Refugees.

This scholarship is valued at $2,000 and is available for one year for Undergraduate students studying at the University of Canberra. Please note that successful applicants will be determined through demonstrated high level financial hardship and demonstrated disadvantage.

Who is eligible?

* Be an international, migrant or refugee student and be able to provide evidence of high level financial hardship in the form a 500 word written statement;
* Be approved for an offer of place or be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis in an undergraduate degree

Scholarships are valued at 25% of the total program tuition fees.

Who is eligible?

Students must be enrolled in one of the following Undergraduate Degree Programs to gain one of the scholarships as listed:

Bachelor of Pharmacy
Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine
Bachelor of Nutrition and Food Sciences
Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Bachelor of Medical Sciences

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence to outstanding students. Applicants must have attained the necessary entry requirements as outlined in the current University ‘Programs, Fees and Entry Requirements for International Students’ booklet.

You should ensure you read the conditions of each scholarship before making an application to ensure that you apply for everything you are eligible for. How are scholarships selected?

Each scholarship has its own selection criteria. University’s aim for transparency in this selection process by detailing the selection criteria on their website. The applicants who best meet the criteria will be offered the scholarship, provided there are no incompatibilities with other scholarships currently held.
